Filmic

Filmic is an Android app that makes your photos look like they were shot on famous film cameras—Hasselblad, Fujifilm, or Leica. Instead of fiddling with sliders, you pick a style (like "Velvia" for rich, contrasty colors, or "Acros" for fine-grained black and white) and the app instantly transforms your image. You can edit photos from your gallery, shoot with the style visible in your camera preview before you capture, or batch-process dozens of photos at once.

The app comes with nine built-in styles, each mimicking the distinctive color and tone character of different film stocks. Some styles use a simple color-shift formula that's fast and predictable; others use a more complex 3D color lookup table that can do subtle things like warming highlights while cooling shadows—the kinds of split-toning effects that real film cameras are known for. Once you've chosen a style, you can fine-tune the result using familiar controls: adjust exposure, contrast, temperature, and tint, or dive into HSL (hue, saturation, lightness) sliders to target specific colors like reds or blues.

A non-technical user might pick Filmic if they want their phone photos to have that timeless, polished look without learning Lightroom or Photoshop. A photographer testing different aesthetic directions could batch-process 50 photos and export them at custom sizes and quality settings. The app respects your choices across sessions—your preferred export quality and output size stick around even after you close it.

Under the hood, the app uses Google's CameraX library to let you preview the style live as you compose a shot, then re-processes the full-resolution image when you press the shutter. For everyday use, it downsamples your preview to keep the adjustments snappy. The roadmap hints at future additions like GPU acceleration for faster live previews and support for raw image files, but the current version focuses on speed and simplicity through the Compose UI framework.
